Selecting things

Layer

Select, All

Rectangular or Eliptical Marquee

Choose layer

Choose rectangular or eliptical marquee tool

Drag the mouse to select the area

Extras - Contrained Aspect Ratio, Fixed Size, Feathering

Freeform

Choose Layer

Choose the Lasso Tool

Drag around the area. Releasing the mouse will join the ends of the area.

Extras - Feathering, adding to the area, subtracting from the area.

Polygonal Selection

Choose Layer

Choose the Polygon Lasso Tool

Drag around the area. Releasing the mouse when the ends are very close together, and the little circle appears, will join the ends of the area.

Extras - Feathering, adding to the area, subtracting from the area.

Color (Magic Wand)

Choose Layer

Choose the Magic Wand Tool

Click on the color that you want to select.

Extras - Tolerance, adding to the area, subtracting from the area.

Magnetic Lasso

Choose the Magnetic Lasso Tool

Drag around the area. Releasing the mouse when the ends are very close together, and the little circle appears, will join the ends of the area.

Extras - Feathering, adding to the area, subtracting from the area, Width, Edge Contrast, Frequency. Using a fill and contrast layer.

Advanced Stuff

Vignette

If it is a multilayered item then select the layer you want to fade into the background.

If the item is a single layer, create a layer for the background and make it color that you want the picture to fade into. You may need to cut your picture out of the background and paste it inito the new layer. Think about using filters to make the background cool.

Choose either the eliptical or rectangular marquee tool and set the Feathering between 15 and 25.

Outline the image that you want to have fade into the background.

Create a selection by creating on the New Selection button near the top of the screen.

Choose Select, Inverse.

Click Backspace.

Deselect everything (Control D)
