Mapping Images
Mapping images is the process of placing "hot-spots"
on the image that are clickable and link to other pages or web sites. If you
go to www. yahoo.com, the entire row of icons
and logo across the top is one image that has had parts of it defined as hot-spots.
This is a tough topic to teach. It is tough for
two reasons:
Mapping images is complicated,
Software exists that does the mapping for you.
I am going to use a simple software package and teach mapping
using software rather than the "old-fashioned" way.
Assignment and Lesson
- Create and save a web page that has an image in it and
a little bit of text. Don't be fancy or spend any extra time on this.
- Open the program called "mapedit" (Start,
Programs, Mapedit).
- Click on File, Open and select the file you created in
step one.
- The program automatically looks to see if there is an image
in the file. Select the image.
- Near the top of the page you will see three icons, a square,
a circle, and a polygon. Select the square icon.
- Draw a square on the part of the image that you want to
turn into a link.
- When you let up on the mouse button another panel pops
up that allows you to enter the link site location. Dont forget to put
in "http://" before your links. There are some other features
here you are free to play with if you wish.
- Try each of the hotspot shapes.
- Click on File, Save
- TEST YOUR PAGE!
When you view the page you will find that the hotspots work
to take you to other sites on the Internet.
Upload your page and email me the link.
