Who is CompTIA?


CompTIA is the Computing Technology Industry Association, a membership trade association formed in 1982 to promote high standards in computer technology. Its members include more than 8,000 cmputer resellers, distributors, manufactuirers, and training companies. More information is available at www.comptia.com/aboutus/.

Why get certified?

There are more than 26,000 A+ certified technicians world wide. If you want to compete for a job in this field you need the certification.

What do the exams cover?

The exams cover the information that would be expected to be known by a high level technician with 6 months of hands-on experience. The test covers:

Hardware Installation, configuring, and upgrading
  Diagnosing and troubleshooting
  Preventive maintenance
  Motherboards, processors and memory
  Printers
  Basic networking
Software OS fundamentals
  Installation, configuring, and upgrading
  Diagnosing and troubleshooting
  Networks

 

Who can take the tests?

Anyone who wants to register and pay the fee. There are no other requirements.

How to get certified?

The exam is a scale method test. this means that the test has a total value of 900 points. some questions are worth more than others depending on the difficulty of the question. You have to score 683 on the hardware exam and 614 on the OS exam. You have 90 minutes for each exam. You can take them both the same day or schedule them on different days. Once you are certified it is for life under the current rules.

What does it cost?

The price according to the compTIA web site is $132.00 per test for a total of $264.00. If you fail one test you pay $132.00 again. Fail them both and you pay another $264.00. You may take it as many times as you wish.
